FAQ

  • What is "Grisaille"?

Grisaille refers to a type of monochromatic painting using neutrals, most often gray tones, to create an image. In the past, this was often utilized as an "under-painting" to figure out all of the issues of an painted image without dealing with color from the start. Contemporarily, it's often used as an academic study method to understand light, shadow, space, and form.

  • Will I have time to draw/paint in this workshop? And will there be feedback?

Yes and yes! The first part of our workshop will be dedicated to slide lecture/demo to help round out these rich, expansive concepts. Once the live demonstration starts, you'll have time to work on your own piece. The last 40 or so minutes of class will be dedicated to participant feedback on submitted artworks.

  • I'm a beginner- is this workshop appropriate for me?

Yup! I've worked hard to create a workshop that will support artists of all levels, and I know that there will be lots of relevant concepts that you'll be able to introduce into your own personal studio practice after our workshop wraps up. Additionally, the recordings will be available to you (without an expiration date!), so you'll be able to go back and rewatch at any time and pick up new insights as your own practice develops.

Construct Rich Tonal Images in both Drawing and Painting Utilizing "Grisaille" Concepts

Sunday, July 23rd, 2-9pm (EDT)

In Addition to the Live Zoom Workshop:

A Zoom workshop can't cover *all* of this material, so to help you continue to develop the personal art practice you need to create the work you love, we've included a number of videos and PDF documents to help continue to guide you on your journey!

  • Material Walkthroughs

Access videos at any time once the workshop is published (before and after our workshop!) that walk you through the drawing and painting materials that we'll be using in this course: Graphite, Charcoal, Acrylic Paint, and Oil Paint.

  • Bonus Material

While we won't have time to cover this in the live workshop, you'll get access to a video demonstration of an indirect Grisaille Marker and Color Pencil application to help you lean into the grisaille concepts and champion mixed-media in your own practice!

  • Tonal Guide PDF

Value vs Tone, Saturation vs Chroma, and other useful vocabulary and tonal systems are broken down for you in this handy printable PDF guide!
