The Open Sketchbook

Looking for some sketchbook motivation? Material for a classroom lesson? A structured visual prompt to return to throughout the month? Still-Life Club is a free monthly set of high-resolution reference images photographed in my studio for artists to make use of, and is meant to function as a “virtual studio visit” rather than a one-time download.

Each month, I release one or two new setups and rotate out the previous month’s references. My typical subjects range from plaster casts and anatomical forms to natural objects and other collected/gifted studio materials arranged under different lighting conditions (a favorite of mine is a double warm/cool light!)

Included alongside the references are two recorded sketching demonstrations from earlier Still-Life Club setups. In them, I talk through how I approach the same subject matter using different materials, experimentation in the sketchbook, and different drawing ideas.
